#SEAWEEDMATTERS
Understanding the Bigger Picture-
A Stakeholder Debate

Scientific Issues such as 'the importance of seaweed' aren't always as simple as they first seem.
Issues surrounding science are often embedded within our society, and developments in scientific understanding can have a profound effect on society, for better or for worse.
Dr Francis' research into seaweed has an effect on multiple stakeholders, all of which show a different level of understanding and may be affected differently by the results of the research.
In this task, you will put yourselves in the position of various stakeholders related to Dr. Francis' research and engage in a debate with other stakeholders.
This activity requires students to work in groups.
Stakeholders which you may choose include...
Researchers
EPA
Sewerage Companies
Water Treatment Companies
Local council
General Populace
You will need to undertake some background research on each stakeholder and learn about their views on the issue. Not all stakeholders may start off with a particular view or side. Instead, they may gravitate towards a side in the argument over the course of the debate.
The debate will not be a formal debate. It will be more in the style of a discussion or a role-play.
As you conduct the debate, consider how scientific issues may be effected by the various stakeholders involved. How does it compare to what you are doing?
TASK 1: Debating as Stakeholders

Communities and groups such as the Deakin Seaweed Group are all highly influential in the area of Prue's research!
