Under the Microscope- Conducting an Experiment & Writing a Lab Report

During Dr. Francis' teaching career, not only has she been a lecturer for University students, she has been a teacher at schools as well, undertaking workshops to help students just like you to understand why 'seaweed matters'.

As a Year 9 or 10 science student, you will have conducted quite a few experiments and written laboratory reports, but incase you haven't or need a refresher, we will quickly go over how to write a lab report. You will then get to take a sneak peak into Dr. Francis' workshop by conducting one of her experiments on Seaweed and learn how they reproduce.

Finally, you will write up your own lab report similar to the one Dr. Francis has written that you will find in Activity 2 using the structure and results you obtained from Tasks 1 and 2. We hope from this task you will learn that you don't have to wear a white lab coat, safety glasses and have crazy hair to be a scientist like Dr. Francis and that Seaweed isn't just that 'yucky slime' you accidentally step on at the beach!

TASK 1- How to Write a Lab Report- (30 minutes)

  • For this quick refresher on how to write a lab report you will download/ be handed the worksheet that details tips and the structure of a lab report.

  • You need to complete the worksheet as you follow along with the video that is linked in the worksheet.

  • This task will assist you to write the lab report in Task 3.

TASK 2- Making Seaweed Babies- (1 hour)

  • In this task you will conduct an experiment to understand reproduction and fertilisation rates of a type of Seaweed called Neptune's Necklace.

  • You will download/ be handed the worksheet containing the instructions and results table.

  • As you conduct the experiment, make sure to make note of the 3 variables, the hypothesis and the aim that you learnt about in Task 1 as you will need these for Task 3.

TASK 3- Writing your own Lab Report- (30-40 minutes)

  • After completing Task 1 where you learnt how to write a lab report, and Task 2 where you conducted an experiment, you will now write your own lab report based on the experiment you conducted.
